Music aficionados and readers of Nero Wolfe should enjoy spending time with the eccentric and delightfully grumpy Jacobus and his friends; this novel works even for those new to the series. Includes fun musical interludes performed by the Boston Symphony Orchestra.

Elegantly structured to match the Richard Strauss piece from which the title comes, Elias's fourth title (after Death and the Maiden) in his highly regarded series deserves a standing ovation. Think Donna Leon for pacing and thoughtfulness and Deborah Grabien for music's integral role in the plot.

Though a few near caricatures might make some readers wince, this fast-paced and punchily written mystery will entertain most fans, even as it delivers a fluid understanding of classical music.

Elias, a former symphony violinist, concertmaster, and music professor, gives us a glimpse into the soul of a musician and the relationships among the artist, the music, and the instrument. And then there is one-of-a-kind virtuoso Jacobus, perhaps one of the most unique protagonists in mysteries. Elias's debut, Devil's Trill, was a great reading experience; his new book is outstanding.
